New Mexico Breeders Incentive Awards are $8.5 Million in 2004 In 2004, the New Mexico Breeders Association handed out more than $8.3 Million in breeders incentive awards to race horses born and raised in New Mexico, up from $6.5 Million in 2002. The latest report from the New Mexico State Animal and Range Sciences Department shows 1,190 people were involved in the breeding industry. The heart of that industry is right here in Valencia County, home also to Centerfire Real Estate. To quote the report, " Twenty seven percent of horse racing operations reported having race horses on their property of 20+ years.Expansion of the industry is evident by the number of newer operations. Operations in business for 3-5 years accounted for 20% of the total number of operations while 19% of the total operations have been in business less than 3 years. Approximately one-third of the industry has been in place 6-20 years. There's plenty of room to bring your horse breeding operation to NM, and particularly to Valencia County, where properties are still affordable. According to the New Mexico Breeders Association, there are approximately 19 Thoroughbred and 13 Quarter Horse Stallions standing in Valencia County at different breeding facilities, not to mention the large number of boarding farms that house mares and foals.Valencia County is centrally located in NM and has the easiest access to the various tracks across the state. You are no more than 250 miles from any track, other than the new track at Hobbs, Zia Park in southeastern NM. THOROUGHBREDS RACING IN NEW MEXICO
Gaming started on New Mexico Race Tracks in 1999 with the provision that 20% of the net win from gaming machines goes to horsemens's purses. An additional 10% of the winner's share of the purse at racetracks goes to a breeder's award to the breeder of record of New Mexico bred horses that win a race.
Monies from gaming have stabilized the New Mexico horse breeding industry and have greatly increased horse breeding operations and related industries that support horse breeding. A REAL MAN, QUARTERHORSE CHAMPION
