Canon del Buey Ranch
Aragon, New Mexico
LOCATION:
The Caņon del Buey Allotment is located in Southwest New Mexico in Catron County on the Continental Divide.
State Highway 12 from Datil to Reserve, New Mexico crosses the south end of the ranch for about 4 miles, approximately 6 miles east of the small village of Aragon.
SIZE:
40 acres of private land controls approximately 48,000 acres of grazing land in the Apache National Forest, administered by the Quemado Ranger District of the Gila National Forest.
CARRYING CAPACITY:
The grazing allotment is for 344 cows year long including bulls and replacement heifers, with NEPA stipulations for an increase up to 386.
At present the ranch is almost completely stocked to the full permitted members. The owner estimates that there are approximately 330 head of grown livestock (as of July 2007) plus the calf crop.
IMPROVEMENTS:
Fences:
There are approximately 44 miles of exterior fence and 40 miles of interior fence. The fences are 4 strand barbed wire on mostly steel posts with metal or cedar stays.
The fences are in excellent repair and reflect the owner's excellent management.
Corrals:
The owner utilizes portable panels and portable chutes for operating the ranch. In addition there are three sets of corrals including the shipping pens and livestock scales near the Aragon Well in the Tomas Pasture.
Water Towers:
The Livestock are watered by several springs (see attached list) plus earthen Tanks (see attached list) water lots, seeps and wells.
The owners do not live on the ranch full-time. They use a camper, four wheelers and horses to operate the ranch.

ELEVATION AND PRECIPATATION:
The elevation of the ranch varies from a low of 6800' to a height of 9600' with an average of approximately 7500'.
Total annual precipitation is 12" to 15" including annual snowfall.
VEGETATION AND TREE COVER:
Grasses: The predominate key species are blue grama, mountain muhly, june grass and Kentucky bluegrass.
Trees &
Browses: Pinon Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Juniper, Cedar and Spruce are the most common trees. The primary browses is mountain mahogany and oak brush
PRICE AND TERMS:
The price including 300 head of grown cattle and a transfer of the Caņon del Buey grazing Allotment for 344, with stipulations of conditions for an increase to 386 Cows Year Long is $1,500,000. Cash.

NEARBY SCHOOLS AND SERVICES:
The Reserve Municipal Schools, located 29 miles from the ranch, offer K thru 12th grade school.
Reserve is the county seat of Catron County with a motel, Jake's grocery store, 3 cafes, 2 gas service stations, a court house, post office, Uncle Bills Bar, etc. with a population of approximately 350-400 residents.
WILDLIFE AND FISHING:
The ranch offers excellent hunting opportunities for elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, bear and mountain lion.
Fishing for trout is also available in Quemado Lake which is 6 miles north of the ranch boundary.
